What is the purpose of orientation?
Orientation is an event for all new students at Northeastern Illinois University. You'll meet with an academic adviser to create your class schedule, in addition to learning other essential information that will help you as a student.
Is Transfer Student Orientation Mandatory?
No, however orientation is strongly encouraged for all new transfer students at NEIU. This program will help with your transition into your new community.
If you are transferring less than 60 credit hours or are undecided as to your major, you REQUIRED to meet with an advisor in the Academic Advisement Center. Advisors are available on a walk-in basis, Monday thru Thursday 8:00 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. and Friday's from 8:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. You can also call (773) 442-5470.
If you have earned an A.A. or an A.S. degree and have already decided upon your major, we strongly encourage you to contact an advisor in your intended major college or department prior to registering for your first semester of classes.
Why should I attend?
On the day of orientation you will:
- Meet with your academic college and learn about degree requirements for your major
- Learn about Financial Aid and ways to pay for college
- Meet with other new transfer students
- Get your student ID
- Learn about the many support services available to students
- Find out more about student organizations and opportunities to get involved on campus
How long is Orientation?
Orientation is a one day program starting in the morning and ending in the afternoon. This day has been carefully designed to assist you in your transition into Northeastern.
Do I really have to attend the whole day?
Transfer orientation is not required, but we do hope that if you attend orientation that you would stay for the whole program. Our goal is to assist you with your transition and answer any questions you might have before you start classes.
I am transferring from another college, but I am classified as a freshman. Do I attend
first-year orientation or transfer orientation?
If you are classified as a freshman, then you are slated to attend one of our first-year orientation sessions, which will be very helpful to you as you transition into NEIU.
Change Your Transfer Student Orientation Date and Attendance
How can I switch my transfer student orientation date?
You can switch your orientation date by calling new Student and Family Programs at (773) 442-5476. Dates are available on a first-come, first-served basis due to program space limitations. There is no waiting list for orientation dates.
Is there a wait list for Orientation Dates?
There is no waiting list for orientation. When changing your date you must pick a date with an open spot. Dates are available on a first-come, first-served basis due to program limitations. For this reason, we cannot accommodate students coming on the wrong date.
What happens if I miss my orientation date?
It is extremely important that you do not miss your orientation date, but we know that sometimes things happen in our life. Please call New Student and Family Programs at (773) 442-5476 and let us know and we'll reschedule your orientation date. If you do not contact our office to reschedule, we will send out a reminder e-mail to reschedule your orientation date.
What happens if I am going to be late for orientation?
If you are running late, please contact our office immediately at (773) 442-5476. At that time, our office staff will let you know if you should come to orientation or reschedule for another time.
I made travel arrangements and I have to leave early/arrive late, is that ok?
In order to meet with an adviser and enroll for classes, you must attend the entire orientation program. Please keep this in mind when you are making your travel arrangements.
If I attend orientation at the end of the summer, will I have to take 8:00 am classes?
If you request to meet with and an academic adviser, they will help you choose classes that best meet your academic needs. However, you will have more class options the sooner you attend orientation, so don't wait--Register Now.
What if I get sick or have a family emergency during Orientation?
We certainly hope this does not happen! If this does occur, please call the New Student and Family Programs Office (773) 442-5476 immediately. You can reschedule and finish completing the program on another date of your choice.
Can I change my intended major at Transfer Student Orientation?
Students are encouraged to change their intended major prior to their Orientation date. You will meet with your academic college based on your intended major. If you decide to change your intended major, please call New Student and Family programs at (773) 442-5476.
How do I register for Transfer Student Orientation?

What if I don't know my Student ID Number?
Please contact New Student and Family Programs at 773-442-5476 for assistance.
What is NEIUport and how do I use it?
At Orientation, you will be asked to log into your NEIUport account to register for classes. NEIUport is NEIU's university-wide internet portal. This portal provides quick, centralized, and secure access to information and services for all NEIU students, faculty, and staff.
Your NEIUport account allows you to:
- Register for classes online
- View course seating capacities (open or closed classes)
- Determine course prerequisites
- Print out a class schedule
- View grades and transcripts
- Request official transcripts
- Review Financial Aid awards
- Print out a tuition and fees statement
- Pay tuition and fees online with credit, debit or check
How do I Obtain a NEIUport NetID and Password?
NEIUport accounts are automatically created for students admitted to NEIU. An NEIU Online Connection! letter is sent shortly after admission acceptance. If you did not receive a letter, you can look up your NEIUport NetID and password. Please go to http://neiuport.neiu.edu. You will need to enter your NEIU student ID number and date of birth.
I'm having problems with my NEIUPort account. Who can help me?
If you continue to have problems logging in to your NEIUport account, please contact Technology Services by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by phone at 773-442-4357, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Fees and Tuition
How do I pay for Transfer Student Orientation?
The orientation fee will automatically be added to your student account.
Is there a cost for Transfer Student Orientation?
Yes, there is an orientation fee that will automatically be added to your NEIU account. A fee of $20 will cover the cost of all orientation materials, parking, mailings, campus facilities, and your first student ID card. The office must also compensate staff that assists you during the program.
Should I bring money to pay for my tuition at Orientation?
No, you will not need to pay for your tuition during Orientation. NEIU uses an electronic billing (e-billing) service. You will receive an e-mail notification to your NEIUport account when your e-bill is available for viewing. You are responsible to have your tuition and fees paid by the due dates. You will be responsible for all late fees regardless of the status of a bill. Please be aware of payment deadlines on the Tuition and Fees Payment Schedule (available under "Calendars".)
Will I be able to meet with Financial Aid during Transfer Student Orientation?
Yes. There are presentations about Financial Aid and Scholarships during Orientation. In addition, you are welcome to stop by the Financial Aid Office and speak with a representative as time permits within the orientation schedule. The Financial Aid Office is located in D Building, Room 200 (second level, above Enrollment and Bursar Services).
Can my family come to Orientation with me?
We STRONGLY encourage you NOT to bring any additional guests with you to transfer student orientation. This program is designed for our students and not any additional guests. If your guests do attend with you, they will not be allowed to participate in student activities during transfer orientation
I have a disability. What accommodations can be made for me at Orientation?
If special assistance or auxiliary aids are needed to accommodate a disability, please contact Student Disability Services (SDS) at NEIU 773-442-4595 or email SDS@neiu.edu to schedule an appointment to discuss any accommodations. Some services may take longer to put into place than others, so we strongly advise contacting Student Disability Services 2 weeks prior to your orientation date.
I have difficulty walking long distances. Will I be able to fully participate in Orientation?
A walking campus tour is part of the orientation program; however we are not equipped to provide transportation assistance (Such as wheelchairs or golf carts). If you are coming to Orientation and you have any permanent or temporary disabilities or special needs which may require advance arrangements for assistance, please contact Northeatern's Student Disability Services (SDS) at (773) 442-4595 or email SDS@neiu.edu at least 2 weeks before your orientation date.
Once I leave Transfer Student Orientation, where do I go for help?
Advisors, faculty, counseling staff, administrative staff, students and many others are all ready to help you! Also, the NEIU Homepage is a great source of information, if you have questions regarding academics, Financial Aid, Student Involvement, etc. Conducting a search is easy. We have so many great resources on campus just waiting to be used!
