Youngstown Steel

 

Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company was an outgrowth of the old Iroquois Steel Mill located at 95th and the Calumet River.  It was located across the Calumet River from the South Works plant of U. S. Steel.  There was not much room for expansion at that location, so the operation was moved to northwest Indiana.  Currently the Iroquios Container facility of the Port District is located at the former site of Youngstown Steel.  Notice the black smoke pouring out of the smokestacks.  It was at the time considered a sign of prosperity, not an environmental problem.
