South Deering Commerce
The local shopping district in South
Deering developed originally along Torrence Avenue from about 105th street
to 109th Street across the street from the Wisconsin Steel Plant, the economic
engine of the community. Major purchases were probably made in the
Commercial Avenue shopping district in neighboring South Chicago.
After WW II, a shopping district developed via strip malls along 95th Street
between Stony Island Avenue and Yates Avenue adjacent to the Jeffrey Manor
housing development.
