South Chicago Theaters
Neighborhood theaters were a large
part of the local people's lives. Every community had their own set
of theatres. South Chicago actually had eight theatres in walking
distance of each other. Some of the major theatres in South Chicago
were the Calumet, the Gayety, and the Commercial Theaters. Yet, as
time progressed these neighborhood theaters closed and moved to suburban
shopping malls. The last of the South Chicago movie theatres were
taken down by the 1980s.
