Hegewisch Commerce
The "town" of Hegewisch grew up around
the original shopping district located along Baltimore and Brandon Avenues
between 132nd and 135th Streets. It remains as the primary commercial
district in the neighborhood. Local residents did their day to day
shopping in this area. However when they needed large scale purchases
they went "Downtown". But to Hegewisch "Downtown" meant Hammond where
there were several large department stores including a Goldblatts and a
Minas Store. It was easier for Hegwisch residents to get to downtown
Hammond than to South Chicago where most southeast side residents did their
major shopping or to downtown Chicago.
