East Side
Neighborhood Schools
There are a large number of
neighborhood schools,
both public and private, in the East Side neighborhood. As
demographic changes in the area occur, certain patterns have
emerged.
Fewer children are attending Catholic schools
resulting in the closing of St. George Elementary School and St.
Francis
De Sales Elementary School. However, both
buildings are still being used as schools. The St. George
building
is used by Our Lady of Guadalupe, a growing
Mexican Catholic parish school from the neighboring South Chicago
community
with increasing enrollment. The St. Francis building is used by the
nearby
Gallistel School as an upper grade center.
The area public schools are experiencing an
increase in enrollment as large numbers of Mexican families with school
age children move into the community. Within recent years area
elementary schools have built new additions to serve the growing
enrollments.
