East Side
Residential Architecture
of the 1950's
These houses are commonly called raised ranch style
houses. They
are more modern adaptations of the Chicago Cottage and the Chicago
Bungalow.
They are single family dwellings, built on 25 or 30 foot wide lots
(this
is the standard width of a city residential lot in most Chicago
neighborhoods).
The mass production techniques of factories were adapted to building
houses
with the result that there was not much variation in styles on many
residential
blocks in the neighborhood.
