Commerce of the East Side
Numerous commercial enterprises
developed in the East Side community fueled by the prosperity of the steel
mill community. Until recently most were family owned and operated
enterprises. The original shopping district of the East Side was
near 99th and Ewing Avenue close to the train station. After the
turn of the century, the business center of the community moved to 106th
and Ewing Avenue. More recently the East Side Mall was built on the
southern end of the community. Many of the smaller businesses were
forced to close as larger franchises opened in the area.
