Fills and Landfills Maps
These maps depict how the natural landscape has been changed by contact with man and his need to dominate the environment.

The maps below show the 9700 block of Avenue H . The first map from 1897 shows that east of the block were railroad tracks (EJ&E RR). Just beyond the railroad tracks to the east is Lake Michigan. The map below that is the same block in 1947. Lake Michigan is no longer across the railroad tracks, having been filled in, mostly with slag, to create Calumet Park.

The map above shows the location of many of the landfills which existed on Chicago's Southeast Side, which had one of the highest concentrations of landfills and garbage dumps in the country.
