The Department of Reading is accredited by the International Reading Association. The Department of Reading is committed to advocating high standards for reading professionals and to preparing highly qualified professionals in the field of literacy.   • The Department of Reading offers a Master of Arts Degree in Reading , leading to the Illinois Type 10 Certification in Reading and provides support to other programs in the College of Education that prepare future teachers.
  • The Master of Arts in Reading is designed to meet the urgent need for highly qualified literacy specialists at both the elementary and secondary school levels. Teachers who possess Illinois Type 03, 04, or 09 certificates can qualify for Illinois Type 10 Reading Specialist Certification. Applicants for a Type 10 Reading Specialist Cetification must have two years teaching experience.
  • The Reading Department sponsors  the Reading Center which provides programs to support  needs of children in grades K-12 who are experiencing reading difficulties.
