PKAL Delegation to China

Dr. Varma-Nelson was a member of a delegation that visited the People's Republic of China in July 2005. She was chosen to teach a demonstration course in organic chemistry implementing the PLTL model. The visit was sponsored by Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL). PKAL is an informal, volunteer, national alliance of faculty, administrators and other professionals working together to strengthen undergraduate science education.

Dr. Varma-Nelson returned to China in November 2005.  She was one of only two chemists invited, planned and participated in a major bilateral seminar on learning, teaching and research in the undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) environment. At this seminar, entitled: “Pro-Seminar on Sino-US Undergraduate STEM Education Reform,” Dr. Varma-Nelson and her colleagues presented strategies currently in practice in American collegiate science, such as Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL), and began communication about further networking between China and the United States.
