G&ES 377:  Computer Cartography

The following maps were produced in conjunction with the Computer Cartography course at Northeastern Illinois University in the fall of 2003.  Each map was designed to fulfill an assignment illustrating a different aspect of computer cartography, including choroplethic and isoplethic mapping, proportional and color symbols, the use of text, scattered dots, and directional mapping.  Click on each of these images for a larger view:

TWO CHOROPLETHIC MAPS:  Maps of the United States, illustrating (a) "Percent Non-White Residents by State" and (b) "Percent  Hispanic Residents by State."  Both are created with the program Paint using 1990 data from the U.S. Bureau.

PROPORTIONAL CIRCLE MAP:  A map of the western U.S. illustrating with proportional circles the American Indian population of each state, created with CorelDRAW and based on  Census Bureau data from 1990.

COLOR MAP A map of the state of New Mexico illustrating both the 1990 population density of each county  and the location of state and national parks with color symbols.  The map was created with CorelDRAW with data obtained from multiple sources, including the University of New Mexico, the state website, and a AAA road atlas.

TEXT MAP:  A map of Austria and bordering countries, created with data from Goode's World Atlas and a travel company website.

SCATTERED DOT MAP:  A map of the west side of Chicago, Illinois, illustrating the 1990 population of each community area with scattered dots, created with CorelDRAW and using data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

TWO ISOPLETHIC MAPS:   Surface and contour maps of McHenry County, Illinois, illustrating percent of adults working at home, created with the program Surfer and based on 1990 U.S. Census Bureau data.

DIRECTIONAL MAP:  A map on two scales illustrating directions to Starved Rock Lodge at Starved Rock State Park in Utica, Illinois.  The map was created with CorelDRAW with data obtained from multiple sources, including Mapquest, Yahoo, and the DeLorme Illinois Atlas and Gazeteer.
