Welcome to Northeastern Illinois University's Curriculum Materials Collection (CMC) web site.  The CMC is an outstanding collection of resources useful for teaching most subjects in the PreK-12 curriculum.  CMC materials are housed on the third floor of the library with the exception of  the CMC Reference collection, some of which is also on first floor.  The CMC's various  mini-collections  include textbooks, software, children's literature, kits, videos, audio cassettes, ERIC Documents, a picture file, books with lesson plans, reference books, children's magazines, etc.  To find out more about these CMC collections, click on the appropriate categories in the table below.

Children's Literature Collection

The Children's Literature Collection consists of fiction and nonfiction children's books that are relevant to all areas of the K-12 curriculum.  Most of the Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King award winning books are included in the collection as are the "best" 100 picture books, as determined by the New York Public Library.  Another strength is the collection of books on science experiments for children.

Searching NEIU's Catalog for Children's Literature:

To find juvenile books by subject area:

    1) From the catalog's Quick Search page, select "More Limits."
    2) On the Search Limits screen, find the Location area and select "Curriculum Materials Juvenile."
    3) Back on the catalog's search page, type in the subject you seek, ie "science experiments" (DO use the quotation marks in Any Word Anywhere searching, to indicate that you are using the two words as a phrase).

    or:

    1) From the catalog's search page, type "juvenile literature" and the subject word of the subject area you're interested in.
    

To find Spanish/English children's books:

    1)  From the catalog's search page, type "Spanish language materials - bilingual."
    2)  Click on the button "Browse Subject."

The Children's Literature Web Guide
An excellent site, includes such resources as children's book awards, the Doucette Index (an index to lesson plans about children's and young adult books), bibliographies, children's literature organizations, resources for teachers,  and book reviews.

Carol Hurst's Children's Literature Site
Includes a collection of reviews of books for children and ideas of ways to use them in the classroom; subject bibliographies, and professional topics.

100 Picture Books Everyone Should Know
The "best" picture books as selected by librarians at the New York Public Library.

Newbery Medal
Presented annually since 1922 to an American author of the outstanding children's book published within the previous year in the United States.

Caldecott Awards
Presented annually since 1938 to an American illustrator of  the outstanding picture book published in the United States within the previous year.

The Coretta Scott King Awards
Presented annually in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to an African American author and an African American illustrator.

Database of Award-Winning Children's Literature
Conduct a customized search for lists of award-winning children's literature, limiting by such variables as reader's age, setting, historical period, nationality of protagonist or tale, etc.

ERIC Documents

This is a collection of over 410,000  microfiched documents pertaining to education.  ERIC Documents include research/technical reports, conference papers/speeches, project/program descriptions, opinion papers/essays, and teaching guides.  These can be viewed and reproduced using the reader/printers on the second floor of the library.  Some of the more recent ERIC Documents (1995 forward) are available fulltext in the U.S. Department of Education-sponsored ERIC database. To search for fulltext ERIC documents, from the ERIC home page, select Advanced Search. On the Advanced Search page, select Full-Text Availability. Your keyword search will bring up only the more recent fulltext ERIC documents.

Kraus Curriculum Development Library

This is a microfiched collection of curriculum guides from school districts throughout North America.  The index to the Kraus Curriculum Development Library has been installed on the two reference and two public computer terminals on the first floor.  Click on the Kraus icon on any of these computers to access the index.

Magazines for Children

This is a collection of magazines written for children in grades K-12.  The collection also includes Children's Magazine Guide, which is a subject index to children's magazines and web sites, and The Horn Book Magazine, which reviews recently published children's books.

Picture File

This is a collection of approximately 20,000 laminated pictures on a wide range of subjects.  These are particularly useful for students who need pictures for lessons or bulletin boards.  However, please do not staple or otherwise puncture pictures.

Reference Books

CMC Reference books are located on both the first and third floors.  General and subject specific encyclopedias, dictionaries, and thesauri written for children are located on the third floor.  The CMC reference collection on the first floor consists of indexes, bibliographies, directories, and review sources pertaining primarily to children's literature.  Reference materials do not circulate.  Please consult the first floor reference desk for help finding and using these resources.

To search for juvenile software by subject:

1) On the library catalog's Quick Search screen, select More Limits. On the Limits screen, find the Primary Formats area and select "Software/Computer File." Then on the Quick Search screen, type in your subject area (e.g. "social studies").

Children's Software Revue
Searchable database of children's and educational software.  Search by subject and grade level.  Software is reviewed and rated. Use NOR606 for the password.

In-depth research papers written by graduate students in the Department of Special Education.  The library keeps these for the most recent 10 years.

Finding Tests and Test Reviews

The Test Collection consists of intelligence, achievement, and psychological tests available at the MLRC service desk.  A Northeastern Illinois University ID is required to use this test collection.  Tests must be used in the MLRC and may not be photocopied in order to remain in compliance with test publishers' restrictions.  The CMC also includes Tests in Microfiche, which are unpublished tests often cited in professional literature. Tests in Microfiche may be photocopied.

Circulation of Tests

Request CMC tests at the third floor service desk.  Tests are kept in a restricted area and are only available to NEIU students, faculty, and staff.  Tests do not circulate; they must be used in-house.
 

Searching NEIU's Catalog for Tests

To search for tests in a particular subject area:

From the catalog Quick Search page, select More Limits. On the Limits page, scroll to Location and select CMC Standardized Tests. Click on the Set Limits button. Back on the Quick Search page, type in the subject area (i.e. "achievement").

To locate a test for which you have the title:

From the Quick Search page, type in the title of the test and select Start of Title.
 
 

How to Find Citations to Reviews of Tests in Mental Measurements Yearbook, Test Critiques, and Tests in Print

1) From the library home page, click on “Databases.”
2) Click on “Education.”
3) Click on “Specialized Education Databases.”
4) Scroll down and click on "Mental Measurements Yearbook" and select the database from the list that appears.
5) Type test name in search box. Fulltext test reviews are available for tests reviewed in the more recent volumes of the Mental Measurements Yearbook: volumes 9-16. To search for reviews in Volumes 1-8, use Test Reviews Online.

Textbooks: Elementary and Secondary

The CMC’s Textbook Collection consists of K-12 textbooks representing most curricular areas. We have striven to include  in this collection exemplary textbooks and those which reflect usage in the Chicago Public Schools.

Textbooks do not circulate.  Because of high demand, textbooks are intended for in-library use only.  Call numbers for CMC textbooks begin with “CMC.TEXT.”
