Library Services for Persons with Disabilities Policy

Equipment

Equipment available on the 1st and 2nd floors:

Adjustable workstations which can accommodate wheelchairs

Equipment available on the 3rd Floor of the Library ONLY for patrons who have identified themselves as disabled at the H.E.L.P. Office:

An Optelac color and black & white magnifier and a Visualtec machine

A TDD telephone

Services provided by the Library:

Online Catalog Aid. Staff at the Reference Desk, Periodicals/Government Information Center Desk, and the 3rd Floor Service Desk can help patrons search the Library Catalog and Periodical Indexes at any of the public work stations on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Library for up to 15 minutes any time. NO APPOINTMENT is needed.

Online Catalog Extensive Aid. When patrons need more than 15 minutes of help using the Library Catalog and Periodical Indexes, an APPOINTMENT for extensive aid is necessary. Contact Joanne Trujillo at the 3rd Floor Service Desk, Ext.4496 to make an appointment.

Retrieving books. Student aides from the Circulation Desk, 1st Floor, will retrieve books from the shelves for patrons with disabilities when student aides are available.

Retrieving magazines and journals. Staff at the Periodicals/Government Information Center Desk will retrieve periodicals on shelves from a periodical index printout for patrons with disabilities when staff are available. No appointment is necessary.

Copying materials. Copy Center staff, 2nd Floor Library, will copy library materials and periodical articles which patrons with disabilities have identified from retrieved journals. The cost is charged to the student's NEIU ID debit card. Time spent copying must be limited to 30 minutes. This service is BY APPOINTMENT and patrons with disabilities must be present at the time of the appointment to present their NEIU ID cards. For further help, contact the Copy Center, Ext. 4606.

Study carrel. Students with disabilities may sign out a key for daily use of a study carrel from the 3rd Floor Service Desk.

Services not provided

Staff CANNOT read from books and periodicals for patrons. Students should ask for help from the H.E.L.P. Office, Ext.3135.
