- 1. Do I have to be on campus to access the Library Home Page?
- No. You may access the Library Home Page at http://www.neiu.edu/~neiulib from any computer that has access to the Internet.
- 2. Once I access the Library Home Page do I have access to all of the online resources listed?
- Anyone may access all of the online resources from any computer on campus. Only persons affiliated with NEIU can access all of the online resources from computers off-campus. However, many resources are accessible to anyone from any computer off-campus and no affiliation with Northeastern Illinois University is necessary. They include the Library's online catalog, where you can search for books and other library materials, locally created or compiled resources such as those listed on the Subject Guides pages, a number of Reference Tools and links to many external web pages.
- 3. I am not a Northeastern Illinois University student, faculty or staff member. Can I use a computer in the Library to access all of the Library's databases?
- Yes. The Library is open to the public and all Web resources are accessible from any computer within the Library.

- 4. I am not a Northeastern Illinois University student, faculty or staff member. Can I access the Library's periodicals indexes and fulltext databases from my computer at home?
- No, you will not be able to access many of the Library's databases, such as those containing fulltext journal articles, from your computer at home. However, many free Web resources including the Library's online catalog, are available from off-campus computers with no restrictions.
- 5. What kinds of online resources are available only to Northeastern Illinois University students, faculty and staff from off-campus computers?
- Online resources such as periodical indexes and other databases are accessible only to Northeastern Illinois University students, faculty and staff by contractual agreement with the commercial providers of those products. These include many of the full text databases for journal articles listed in the Library's Databases pages, the Library's electronic books and some of the electronic resources listed in the Reference Tools pages.
- 6. I am a Northeastern Illinois University student, faculty or staff. How do I access the Library's databases from a computer not located on campus.
- If you are connecting to the Internet from a computer at home or other off-campus sites and using Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) as your Internet Service Provider (ISP) you have access to all of the resources on the Library Home Page. If you are not using NEIU as your ISP you will be required to login to commercial databases (e.g., fulltext article databases) using your NEIU email Login and Password. However, many resources, such as the library catalog, do not require a login.

- 7. What is my NEIU email Login and Password for accessing the Library's commercial databases?
- As
a Northeastern Illinois University student, faculty or staff member,
an email account has been established in your name. If you are
a student and do not know your NEIU email Login, you may visit
www.neiu.edu/~scs and
click the Student Email Account Lookup link. You will need
to have your Student ID number in order to access your login information.
You will need to know your Touchtone registration PIN number to
access your password information. Passwords will not be provided
over the telephone. Students having trouble with this online form
should stop by Student Computing Service at B-107 with their student
ID.
- If you are Faculty or Staff and do not know your NEIU email Login contact the Help Desk at 773-442-4357 or go to Room Cls-0004 in the Classroom Building.
Please do not call the Library regarding your login and password. We will not be able to give you this information.
- 8. I am a NEIU student, faculty or staff member but I am not using NEIU as my email account or Internet Service Provider (ISP). Can I still access the Library's resources using these services?
- You can access the Library Home Page and use many of the resources even if you use other email accounts (Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail) or Internet Service Providers (AOL, for example). However, you will need to provide your NEIU email Login and Password when accessing commercial databases (e.g., fulltext article databases). You may use any ISP to connect to the Internet but only your NEIU email Login and Password will enable access to the commercial databases.
- 9. How do I know which resources will require me to enter my NEIU email Login and Password?
- If you are using NEIU as your Internet Service Provider (ISP) you can access all the resources on the Library Home Page. If you are not using NEIU as your ISP you will be shown a Database Login screen when you click on a database that requires you to enter your NEIU email Login and Password. You will be required to login again only if you restart your browser (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer) and return to one of the commercial databases.
-
- 10. How do I set up my computer to access the Internet and the Library Home Page?
- A free Internet account is available to you as a student, faculty or staff member of Northeastern Illinois University. This will allow you to access the Internet and the use of the Library databases and catalogs from off-campus with your computer and a modem. Your modem should be set to dial NEIU's Remote Access Server phone numbers: 773-583-1555 (long sessions) or 773-583-1222 (30 minute limit). Once your modem connects to one of these phone numbers you will need to use your NEIU login and password to connect to the Internet. After you are connected to the Internet, use Netscape or Internet Explorer to go to the Library's Home Page at http://www.neiu.edu/~neiulib to access all the Library's online resources. Using NEIU as your ISP will automatically permit you to access all databases as if you were using a computer on campus; no additional login or passwords will be required.
-
- If you wish to use another ISP to connect to the Internet you will need to contact the commercial provider you wish to use. They can provide you with the necessary software and documentation instructing you how to connect to the Internet. After you are connected to the Internet use Netscape or Internet Explorer to access the Library's online resources at http://www.neiu.edu/~neiulib . Since you are using a non-NEIU ISP you will need to enter your NEIU email Login and Password to access many databases (see questions 5-9 above for more information on your NEIU email Login and Password and off-campus access to databases).
- 11. Where do I get more information and technical assistance on setting up Northeastern Illinois University as my Internet Service Provider?
- For
further information on off-campus computer access go to the Student
Computing Services Web site for complete dial-up documentation.
If you do not have your NEIU login and password information, please
see FAQ # 7 for details on acquiring your
login information. The documentation and files relating to Internet
access are also available online at www.neiu.edu/~scs.
You must be a NEIU student, faculty or staff member to establish
off-campus computer access to NEIU.
