X. Collections Program Officer - Function and Role
The Collections Program Officer provides leadership, coordinates
the bibliographers' efforts, and has responsibility for the integrity
of the overall collection. Since scholarly publications often
are interdisciplinary, she/he encourages collaboration and teamwork
among bibliographers, as well as communication between the Library
and the academic departments. She/he initiates continuing review
of the policies and processes concerning the collections. At present,
the Collection Program Officer is the Associate University Librarian
for Collections and Information Services.
Responsibilities of the Collections Program Officer
The Collections Program Officer is responsible for a number
of activities. These include:
- planning, calling, and chairing all Collection Development
Committee meetings;
- participating with Library Administration in computing allocations
to subject funds based upon the allocation plan;
- leading strategic planning review for collections and access
to materials;
- coordinating, reviewing, and advising bibliographers concerning
their activities,
- working with the primary vendor and each subject bibliographer
to create and revise a profile for the approval program and acting
as contact to the vendor for revisions of the profiling;
- initiating and leading periodic review of the collection
management policy;
- coordinating policies that meet the research and information
needs of academic programs;
- coordinating the systematic evaluation of the collection
and directing ongoing analysis efforts to identify gaps in the
collection;
- providing orientation and training for new bibliographers;
- participating with the Library Administration and the Library
faculty in identifying library needs in relation to existing
and proposed academic programs and representing them to the University
community;
- monitoring collection development trends in academic librarianship.
