IV. Collaborative Collection Management among Illinois Libraries

Illinois Cooperative Collections Management Program. The Library is a member of the Illinois consortium which has developed collaborative collections projects as described in A Plan for Collaborative Collections Management among Illinois Libraries. The consortium, the Illinois Cooperative Collections Management Program (http://libws66.lib.niu.edu/ccm/), gives grants that provide funds to purchase titles not held in the statewide meta-collection and negotiates very advantageous terms with commercial producers of electronic resources. Electronic delivery of information makes cooperative projects between Illinois libraries efficient and effective methods of sharing resources. As part of its membership in the ICCMP, The Library has agreed to retain the last copy of any monograph in its collection in the state of Illinois in order to preserve the unique statewide collection. See Commitment to Membership; Acceptance of Membership in the Illinois Libraries Consortium, Appendix 1.

Shared indexing services and delivery of online full text. The Library participates in consortial agreements to provide access to many electronic resources through the Illinois Bibliographic Information Service (IBIS), the Illinois Cooperative Collection Management Program (ICCMP), the Illinois State Library, the Illinois Digital Academic Library project (IDAL), and the Chicago Library System. The Library also maintains individual agreements for other databases with venders. IBIS is a collection of online databases available to the Northeastern Illinois University community as a subscribing ILCSO member library. IBIS currently provides access to a wide variety of subject-based periodical indexes and abstracts. The ICCMP program makes available upper-level academic databases at reduced prices. The Illinois State Library has provided free access to all libraries in Illinois to databases. In February, 2000, IDAL began providing access to databases which provide full text at an undergraduate level. All databases authenticate Northeastern users by IP range.

Access to all databases is available from the Library's Home Page. This Home Page is the initial web page that users see from public workstations in the Library. While users may access the Library Home Page remotely, users must follow procedures established by the NEIU Academic Computing Department in order to authenticate themselves as a member of the NEIU community. Not all databases will be available if users do not follow this procedure.
