VII. The Collection Development Committee - Function and Role

The Collection Development Committee is a standing committee of the Library. All Library faculty who serve as bibliographers are members of the Committee, as well as the Technical Services Librarians and all Library Administrators. Additional Library faculty and staff are asked to attend meetings when their input is necessary. The Committee is called to meetings at regular intervals by the Collections Program Officer who serves as Chairperson. It reviews policies and procedures of the Library and recommends them to the University Librarian.

Responsibilities of the Collection Development Committee

The Collection Development Committee is responsible for a number of activities. These include:

• meeting at regular intervals to receive information concerning state-wide, University, and Library collection development and management issues;
• recommending policies concerning collection management to the University Librarian;
• advising the Library Administration concerning the Library materials budget distribution, the collection management policy, and the approval program;
• determining an annual calendar for ordering monographs, general periodicals, indexes, electronic resources, and additional serial subscriptions;
• advising Technical Services and Circulation Services concerning procedures;
• discussing collection development issues of concern and new technological developments in an online and networked environment.
