Appendix 5
This policy addresses issues relating to the Library's acquisition,
processing, and maintenance of videocassettes. The Library acquires
audiovisual materials which enhance the instructional process.
Materials from its collection may be borrowed according to its
regular circulation policy.
University Media Services maintained a multimedia resource collection
for faculty classroom use. Most materials from its collection
were cataloged and added to the Library's video collection in
the summer, 1999. A few titles from the University Media Services
collection were identified as used regularly in the classroom
and were designated for use only in a classroom situation by Northeastern
Illinois faculty. Most titles in the UMS collection were merged
into the Library video collection and now may be borrowed.
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT AND ACQUISITION
The Library collects videocassettes which support the curriculum,
which enhance the instructional process at the University, and
which feature great performances, classic works, documentaries
and quality features which commercial video rental outlets may
not carry.
Library faculty who act as bibliographers for assigned subject
areas make selection decisions based upon established criteria
for their funds. Licensing limitations affect the decision to
purchase. The Library only acquires videocassettes that may be
loaned to patrons. It complies with copyright requirements and
fair use of the video and will not add any which have been illegally
copied or which restrict lending on their labels. The Acquisitions
Department will determine the vendor from which to purchase.
CATALOGING, CIRCULATION, AND COLLECTION
All Library videocassettes will be given full-level cataloging
according to the most recent edition of AACR and will be classified
using the Library of Congress classification system. The call
numbers will be prefixed with "video." and have a location
of "NEIU 3rd floor service desk". They will be housed
in the Multimedia Learning Resource Center and will generally
circulate, except those located at CICS. Viewing rooms are available
for in-Library use.
