Faculty views are important in the development of academic planning and faculty often serve to make recommendations at many levels affecting university life. To assist those involved in assessment activities in understanding the framework under which faculty governing bodies operate, click onto the following link:

The following committees and task forces operate through faculty governance structures or through student affairs structures.


Committees

The General Education Committee

Purpose
The General Education Committee has 3 purposes:
  1. To develop policy recommendations on matters pertaining to the General Education Program in consultation with the Coordinator of the Program and other appropriate administrators. Recommendations shall be forwarded to the Chair of the Faculty Council on Academic Affairs.

  2. To consider general education course proposals for the University's Limited-List of courses and to forward recommendations for course approvals to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In the event the committee does not recommend approval of a proposed course, it shall provide a written rationale for its decision to the chairs of the department of program submitting the course.

  3. To conduct periodic reviews of General Education Limited-List courses.
Membership

Voting membership includes 2 faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences, 2 from the College of Education, 2 from the College of Business and Management, one from Resource Professional and two elected at-large by and from the Faculty Assembly. Two students, named by the Student Senate, shall be invited to serve as non-voting members. The Program Coordinator, Dean of the College of Arts and Science or his/her designee, and other appropriate administrators or their designees shall serve as non-voting members. The term of membership is 2 years.

The Student Affairs Assessment Committee

Purpose

The Student Affairs Assessment Committee serves as an advisory group to the Vice President for Student Affairs on matters relating to the assessment of student learning outcomes. Specially, the committee will:

  1. Provide leadership for and conduct assessment that complements departmental assessment efforts and measures identified division outcomes.

  2. Annually review the departmental assessment processes and expectations and initiate actions to improve these and strengthen the departments' capabilities to undertake assessment.

  3. Facilitate sharing of assessment strategies and ways to improve student learning in departments and programs within Student Affairs.

  4. Review departments' annual assessment plans and reports and provide feedback to departments to enable continued improvement in the undertaking of quality assessment.

  5. Serve as a resource to departments as they undertake assessments and annual reports (workshops, guidebook, assessment tools, etc.)
Membership

The Student Affairs Assessment Committee will be chaired by the Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs. Each office will have a representative selected by its director. Committee members will serve as internal resources for their department on assessment and provide leadership within their department for the development of assessment plans and reports. Representatives from other campus assessment groups will be asked to serve as ex-officio members of the committee.

Steering Committee for Self Study

Purpose

To provide assistance in leading the university community in gathering information and preparing for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association’s visit scheduled for January 22-24, 2007. The steering committee will work with the appointed Coordinator of the Self Study Committee, Professor Shelley Bannister who is also Special Assistant to the President.

The Outcomes Assessment Task Force

Purpose

The Outcomes Assessment Task Force serves as an advisory group to the Provost and to the Faculty Council on Academic Affairs on matters relating to the assessment of student learning outcomes. Specifically, the Task Force will:

  1. Consult with departments, programs and the Faculty Council on Academic Affairs in the development of a learning outcomes assessment plan for the University.

  2. Serve as a review body for departmental/program assessment plans and provide feedback about possible revisions in those plans.

  3. Facilitate sharing of assessment strategies and ways to improve student learning with departments, programs and colleges.

  4. Coordinate General Education program assessment efforts with the General Education.

  5. Present a report to the Faculty Council on Academic Affairs each year.

As Special Assistant to the President, Shelley provides leadership to the reaccreditation process with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association and continues her role with the assessment initiative on behalf of Provost Frank. She administers the institutional budget for these assessment efforts. Questions about funds for program assessment efforts should be directed to her office. Shelley can provide consultation on issues related to institutional coordination for our North Central Association Commission on Higher Learning visit scheduled for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Angeles assists faculty with (1) development of learning outcomes assessment tools, plans and provides information regarding accrediting processes, (2) one-on-one consultations and facilitation of group processes to address learning outcomes assessment issues, and (3) department specific presentations and workshops on learning outcomes assessment. More generally, Angeles provides support for campus-wide efforts in learning outcomes assessment.

In addition, Angeles develops and implements the Academic Administrative Leaders Professional Development Program and provides consultation to Deans and other academic leaders related to assessment, curriculum studies and proposals.

Edmund assists faculty with the development of courses and syllabi, development of effective student learning outcomes statements; provides one-on-one consultation; facilitates group processes; and convenes faculty to discuss a variety of teaching and learning issues. In addition, Edmund works with faculty as mentors and explores innovative practices in teaching. Through a Title V grant, Edmund is able to provide professional development opportunities for groups of faculty teaching general education courses.

Masahiro is able to provide general information about academic policies and learning outcomes related to student placement testing and the English Competency Exam. Masahiro and his staff have conducted research studies, including the profiling of NEIU's entering students and correlational studies regarding placement scores and student success in subsequent courses. These studies can provide useful information for curriculum planning and assessment.
