  • 8 Assignments including a final paper will count for 50% of your grade.
  • 1-2 exam/s will count for 10-20% of your grade.
  • Journaling or blogging (your weekly summaries) will count for 10%
  • Class presentation will count for 10%
  • Participation in class will count for 10%

Excel assignment

Weekly time-tracking worksheet:

  1. Follow the worksheet example (above) and duplicate it on your Excel sheet using your own activities.
  2. Add a Total column for your estimated times.
  3. Use the Sum formula.
  4. Track down your activities for a full week and create the 2nd Actual sheet.
  5. For the Estimated-Actual, use a formula again to do the substraction.
  6. Also use formulas to calculate the weekly totals.
  7. Include a conditional statement somewhere (e.g., "if I sleep more than 60 hours a week...").
  8. Include the system date using the now() function.
  9. Shade all labels and headings.
  10. Add a percentage somewhere, such as the percent of time you sleep or do homework out of the total.
  11. Create a chart following a row and a column of your sheet (line or pie chart).
  12. Send the finished sheets and charts to neiu109@gmail.com

  • 8am to 6pm on Fri,
  • 8am to 1pm on Sat, and
  • 1pm to 5pm on Sun in Library 4th floor lab only.

Word and PowerPoint assignments

Your weekly readings should be summarized into a paragraph or a list of the most important points covered by the article read.
These readings will be discussed in class and periodically I will grade the summaries.
In your teams you'll work on a chosen topic, go on a field trip, and each team member will write a short paper using MS Word. The paper will be based on some read article related to your team topic. In your team presentation you may concentrate on your paper or the field trip conducted.
Starting in mid-term (7th or 8th week of class) teams will present to the entire class using PowerPoint presentation tool on the topic worked on.

Database MS Access assignment

Use the data-base program MS Access to create a db-file of your choice.

Examples:

  • Telephone directory of your friends and family
  • Music library directory of your collection
  • Your courses directory
  • A project suggested in your book
  • Extra credit: Include data about computers in our society.
  • Make sure you include at least 4 fields: numeric, character, date and logical (y/n). Create queries so that you

    1. List your table in the order created.
    2. List your table w/ fewer fields.
    3. List your table in alphabetical order (or opposite order than in #1).
    4. List it in numerical order.
    5. List only those records where the date is beyond a certain date (e.g., all people born after 1981).
    6. List only those records whose logical field is YES (e.g., all married people among your friends)
    7. List the records whose numeric field is between 2 values (e.g., all friends who are between 17 and 25).
    8. Print a graph of your data base file (e.g., ages of your friends vs. their names on the x-axis). Do it using a form, or Excel.
    9. Calculate a total or an average of all numeric fields as appropriate (you may include this within a report, as in #10.)
    10. Print a report.
    11. An alternative to printing these 10 printouts is to email your db file as an attachment to neiu109@gmail.com
