Amazon 2003
A 2000 Mile Journey Along the Amazon River
|
On May 20, 2003, three
Chicago educators, including a Chicago public school teacher and staff
from the Chicago Teachers' Center and the Shedd Aquarium, will travel
2000 miles over 18 days from Belem, Brazil to Iquitos, Peru to explore
the mighty Amazon River and rainforest, as students connect to the
expedition via the Internet. This year's expedition is being conducted
in collaboration with Chicago's spectacular Shedd Aquarium, and will
feature Amazon exhibits, professional development opportunities, and
expedition reports at the Shedd. The
Amazon expedition team will relay information about the Amazon River
culture, people, geography, and wildlife, and will investigate the
pressing environmental issues which face the region. Students can
access via the On-Line Expeditions web site daily journals, maps,
photos, video clips, and personal biographies from the Amazon
expedition team, and can chat live with field experts and expedition
team members during the expedition as they embark on their own journey
to explore real world issues connected to the Amazon. Through the Chicago
GEAR UP Alliance, teachers are invited to attend a 7-week Amazon
2003 seminar in February and March, which explores inquiry-based
Amazon curriculum and ways to link students to the live expedition. Additional Amazon curriculum workshops will be
offered at the Shedd Aquarium. Contact
