| Duration: |
3
hours
|
| Brief
Description: |
Students
seem to have great difficulty managing time effectively
and developing decent study habits. Many first year teachers
also seem to be overwhelmed with their workload and have difficulty
prioritizing their task This module will help students assess
how they use their time and help them develop strategies to
be more efficient.
|
| Description
of Learners |
(Size
of class/ prerequisite skills, etc.): This module could be
developed on line or with a class of twenty to twenty-five
students. It could also supplement an orientation seminar
and students could be prepared to do the reading and discuss
it in class. Learners would be students in the middle school
program. There are few prerequisite skills required since
this would be a skill building module.
|
|
| Goals:
|
|
| Objectives: |
1.
Students will identify how they currently use their time.
2. Students will identify what they can control versus what
they have no control over.
3. Students will enter a discussion (on-line or in class)
to compare how other students use their time.
4. Students will develop an action plan for using their time
more efficiently.
|
Instructional
Strategies:
|
This
module will use self-assessment instruments for assessing
how their time is currently allocated. They will read articles
on time management. Case studies will present several
situations where students will decide on how to prioritize
their time. A discussion forum will pose follow-up
questions.
|
| Assessment: |
The
assessment for the module will be an action plan developed
by students and a follow-up assessment to see if they
followed the action plan or modified it.

| On-line
components: |
This
material could be developed on-line or face-to-face. I think
the best strategy might be a brief introduction by an instructor
(preferable a practitioner in the field) who discusses the
real life issues of managing time. This could also be videotaped
or streaming video. The self assessment, reading materials
and cases could be on-line or class-based. The advantage to
being on-line is that students could refer back to it. I
would incorporate the topic of time management into several
classes across the curriculum and see if students feel they
have more control over their time.
