Evaluating Information on the Web

This module for Evaluating Information on the Internet is divided into four sections. Follow the sequence of activities in the following order:

1
General Evaluation Considerations

Because there are so many millions, and someday, billions. of pages of information on the Internet and the Web, it can be an overwhelming task to find the precise information needed at a particular time, and to decide whether to believe it and use it or not.
2
Criteria for developing virtual data

Some criteria have to be applied to the reams of data in order to organize them and to evaluate them. These criteria are available, not surprisingly, on the Internet.
3
Critical questions for review of information

When critical thinking strategies are applied to the evaluation of information on the Internet, the researcher utilizes a series of questions designed to analyze the data according to standards of logic and accuracy.
4
Activities to practice critical review

The practice of applying these criteria or standards to information presented on the Internet develops a skeptical view or disposition which is necessary to the informed and critical consumer of information.

Note: Traditional print evaluation techniques have been adapted to the evaluation of Web pages. The evaluation of Internet resources is a subset of information evaluation in general.
