This assignment is based on a video that will be shown in class on November
6. Different videos will be shown in Section 1 (12:15 in S 323) and
Section 31 (7:05 pm in S 311). You only need to answer the questions
for your class. If you can't make it to your class you can attend the
other class and answer their questions. There will be no make-up showing
of the videos.
Your answers to the following questions must be typed, double-spaced.
Section 1. Genie, the Wild Child
- Very briefly describe what happened to Genie.
- What does Genie's language development tell us about a "critical period"
for language learning? (Note: You need to say more than just
there is or is not a critical period.)
- What are the limits of this case study in terms of what it can tell
us about normal language development?
Section 31. Can Chimps Talk?
- What are the benefits of using a computer keyboard, instead of sign
language, to determine whether chimps can really learn language?
- What is probably the main difference between chimps and humans that
explains why we are able to produce understandable spoken language and they're
not?
- What seems to be necessary for chimps to learn to understand human
language?
