APA publication format, 5th edition

The following are the changes from the 4th edition that I noticed.  There may be others that I didn’t notice.

  1. Most things that used to be underlined should now be italicized, including letters referring to statistics, journal titles and volume numbers (p. 100 – 103), headings level 2 through 4 (p. 113) and the word Figure in the Figure Caption list (p. 302).

  1. All numbers in the Abstract should be figures, not words (p. 125).

  1. Statistical significance levels should be reported in the Abstract (p. 14).  (This seems kind of stupid to me; I don’t know how stringent editors will be in enforcing this.)

  1. Effect sizes are supposed to be reported for all significant effects (p. 25).

  1. Usually, exact p-values should be given, instead of p < .05 (p. 25).

  1. Do not indicate in the text where the Figure will be inserted.

  1. The hanging indent has been returned to references in the Reference section (p. 216).

  1. Citation of online materials (p. 223, 231, 268-281).  Generally, include as much information as you can that would be included in a regular citation (author, title, year, etc.).  In addition, include the source (e.g. URL), and the exact date you retrieved it.  See the manual for more details.

  1. For articles that are still in press, do not give a year, volume, or page numbers (p. 241).

  1. Write the figure number lightly with a pencil in the upper right hand corner of the page with the figure on it (p. 198).

  1. The page header should also be on the figure page (p. 302).
