Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences Core Assignment

 

 

Goal of the Assignment:  To investigate and interpret individual learning styles and multiple intelligences.  From the results of the investigation and interpretation, students will evaluate the tasks of their courses and determine the kinds of learning styles and intelligences that are engaged in each task. Further, based on what each student learned about his or her own learning styles and intelligences, students will demonstrate which strategies would be used in relation to mastering each task.

 

Relationship to General Education Outcomes:

Goal 1: The ability to communicate both in writing and orally.

Goal 2: The skills required to gather, analyze, document, and integrate information.

 

Structure of the Assignment:  For this assignment you will need to do the following:

 

  1. Go to the following websites and take the inventories (these are not tests) for Learning Style: http://www.learning-styles-online.com/inventory/questions.asp

 

Multiple Intelligences: http://www.careerccc.org/products/cp_99_e/section1/quiz.cfm

(N.B. There is an underscore in front and behind the “99”)

 

Important: Remember that these are only two forms of measuring and assessing, and the results do not give you a thorough assessment of yourself as a learner and thinker. They are merely a departure for discussion. The best way to complete an inventory is to go with your first impression and not over analyze your response. When you are done, print out your results.

 

  1. Explore the above two websites and any others on the topic, remembering to take notes on information that you discover about your particular learning style and intelligence strength.

 

  1. Consider a course you are currently enrolled in at NEIU. What are the learning tasks related to that course and what learning style and intelligence areas do they emphasize?  Using the printouts obtained from the two online surveys in #1, record your analysis. Describe a) how you would apply your dominant learning styles and intelligences to master the task ; and b) what specific strategies you can use to succeed on tasks that require learning styles and intelligences that are not your greatest strengths or that represent personal challenges.

 

  1. Prepare a presentation regarding one of the tasks or concepts that you have identified in the course you considered.  This presentation should take the form of your strengths in your learning style and intelligence areas and be no more than two to three minutes long. For example, depending on your personal results you may want to present:

 

A brief statement will be made prior to the presentation as to what learning style(s) or area(s) of multiple intelligences is being represented.

  1. Additionally, you will write a two-page paper addressing the following questions:

 

 

Along with an introduction, transitions and a conclusion, think of answers to the above question(s) as forming your paragraphs.   Please attach your printed results from the online inventories and notes that you recorded with the paper.
