Homework #1:                                                                                                                     Sanders

This assignment is due via e-mail by midnight, Wednesday, September 5, 2001.

We are going to use the Web to find some of the data for our research this semester.  Your first job is to investigate potential sources of this data.

Pick two of the following categories and search the web for data sources.  Remember, we need scientific, numerical data--actual measurements!

Look for sources of hourly, daily, monthly, annual averages for different locations in Illinois; we particularly need data spanning the last 20 years.

Category 1:  Precipitation (e.g. rainfall, snowfall)

    Category 2: Air temperature

    Category 3: Evaporation

    Category 4: Evapotranspiration

Category 5: Stream flow (look for “discharge” measurements as well as “stage” measurements)

Category 6: Ground water levels (e.g. measurements made in water wells)

When you find sites that give the kind of numerical measurements that we are looking for, write a brief description that tells

    a) what data are available, and

    b) what we will have to do to get access to it (e.g. what information do we have to input, what do we have to know to
        get what we want).

Then, e-mail your description and the sites’ URL (address) to me at L-Sanders@neiu.edu.  I will compile the responses and e-mail them to the rest of the class.

If you wish, you may work with one other person on this assignment.
