Daily Objectives #1 (September 1, 2005) Dr. Sanders
By the end of today's class, you should be able to do the following:
v Write the full names of all your classmates.
v Explain what will be required of you in this course.
v On
the web, find the course home page, outline of topics, course
requirements,
homework assignments, and daily objectives.
v Explain
what "MCL" means.
v On
the USEPA's website, find and print the .pdf list of contaminants and
their MCLs.
v Explain
the difference between Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Standards.
v List
and describe the eight groups of contaminants outlined by the textbook,
based on their chemical (or radiological, or biological)
characteristics. Give three examples for each group. For
each chemical, give the chemical formula, molecular weight, density,
solubility in water, state at room temperature (e.g. solid, liquid,
gas), potential health effects, and a common use.
v List
and describe the six major categories of potential sources of ground
water contamination. Give examples of contaminants that might be
released in each category, and classify the contaminants in terms of
their bio/radio/chemical group.
v Determine what material you will
prepare for next week.
