ESCI 340
Spring 2010

Daily Objectives #22 (April 1, 2010)                                                                                                                     Dr. Laura Sanders

On April 20, we will be attending the AEG-NC Section dinner meeting.  More details will be provided; please mark your calendar.

By the end of today's class, you should be able to do the following:

w  Describe what is required of you in the next step of the Geotechnical Project.

w  Explain how a hollow stem auger (HSA) works, and tell why it is commonly used in geotechnical investigations.

w  Explain how a "split barrel" (or "split spoon") sampler is used to extract soil samples.

w  Explain how the Standard Penetration Test is conducted, and demonstrate how to interpret SPT results.

w  Explain what is meant by the term refusal in the SPT.

A few videos: w  The SPT done manually

w
  Hollow Stem Augering

w
This one is an ad, but it does a nice job of illustrating the SPT

w  The SPT done using a drilling rig

w
Hollow Stem Augering and SPT (common in environmental and geotech drilling)

w  Direct Push Sampling (Geoprobe and clear Shelby Tube)
