Daily Objectives #17 (October 25, 2007) Dr. Sanders

By the end of today's class, you should be able to do the following:

v Hydrostratigraphy

Recognize and delineate hydrostratigraphic units.
Distinguish between confined aquifers and unconfined aquifers.
Explain the difference between lithostratigraphic units and hydrostratigraphic units.

v Using Geologic Maps

Locate a study area on a geologic map, and interpret the information the map provides.

v Ground Water Modeling: Conceptual Model

List and describe the components of a conceptual model, the first part of constructing a ground water model.

Today's Agenda:

v Hydrostratigraphy and Flow Systems (partly a review from previous classes)

Recognize and delineate hydrostratigraphic units.
Explain the difference between lithostratigraphic units and hydrostratigraphic units.
Describe how to delineate hydrostratigraphic units when they involve two (or more) lithostratigraphic units, or when they involve only a portion of a lithostratigraphic unit. (See worksheet--not yet linked.)

v Using Geologic Maps

Locate our study area on geologic maps showing Quaternary deposits, bedrock geology, the Stack-Unit Map, and the glacial sediment thickness map.
Read and record the information given by each map, and use it to interpret the geology of the study area.
Explain the connection between the geologic origin of the materials at the site to the hydrostratigraphy.

v Ground Water Modeling: Conceptual Models

Describe the components of a conceptual model, the first part of constructing a ground water model:

Hydrostratigraphy
Boundaries (identify location and type)
Stresses (this usually refers to pumping wells and recharge from infiltration) (We will do this next time.)
Initial conditions (water levels) (We will do this next time.)

For our study area, describe each of the above components of the conceptual model.

v Hydrogeologic Maps and Cross Sections (Homework #4!)

Homework #4 is due today, but given our schedule/time situation, you may hand it in on Tuesday next week. Please do not use ink! Complete it in pencil for now; eventually you will ink it in.
