INTRODUCTION TO EARTH SCIENCE
ESCI 121
Fall 2010
Section 06
|
DAILY OBJECTIVES |
By the end of
today's class, you should be able to do the
following:
w
Review:
Describe the three different types of
geotectonic boundaries, including type of
movement, type of plates usually involved, and
geologic features that can usually be found at
each type of boundary.
w
Review: For the 14 sites we have been focusing on,
determine their relationship to plate
boundaries, including whether or not they occur
at a boundary, and if so, what type of boundary
it is.
w
Explain why most (not all!) divergent plate
boundaries involve two oceanic lithospheric
plates.
w
Explain the relationship between minerals
and rocks.
w Compare the minerals
visible within a rock specimen to the samples in
a mineral kit box, correlating mineral
properties visible in each.
w
Examining rocks of varying compositions and
textures, select from a box of minerals those
that appear to make up each rock.
w
Demonstrate the correct use of a hand lens for
examining minerals and rocks.
w
Describe some of the characteristics of minerals
that allow us to classify them and discern their
properties, including luster,
color, and hardness.
w
Demonstrate how to use a mineral
identification key. |
