DAILY OBJECTIVES
By the end of today's class, you should be able to do the following:

w  Present your "Geologic Point of Interest" poster, and view/score other students' posters using this checklist

EARTHQUAKES

w  Define earthquake, and describe the relationship between earthquakes and faults

w  Explain how earthquake intensity and magnitude differ from each other.

w  Explain how the modified Mercalli intensity scale is used to describe the intensity of an earthquake, and tell why it is sometimes difficult to apply accurately. 

w  Explain how the Richter scale is used to describe the magnitude of an earthquake.

w  Explain how a seismometer works to measure the energy of earthquake waves that reach a seismic measuring station.

w  Describe the motion of P-waves and S-waves.

w  Explain what the P-S lag time (also called "S minus P") refers to, and how it helps us locate the epicenter of an earthquake.
