Section 05
|
DAILY OBJECTIVES |
Reminder: We have
an exam on Thursday! The exam will include
hands-on work with lab materials.
By the end of
today's class, you should be able to do the
following:
w
Review: Demonstrate the correct use of a hand lens for
examining minerals and rocks.
w
Review: Describe some of the characteristics of minerals
that allow us to classify them and discern their
properties, including luster,
color, and hardness.
w
Demonstrate how to approximate the
hardness of a mineral specimen, using a
scratch plate and other tools
available in the lab.
w
Explain how to tell if a mineral specimen has a
specific gravity or density
that is much higher or much lower than that of
most other minerals.
w
Demonstrate how to use a streak plate
to determine a mineral specimen's
streak, and explain why the streak
sometimes is not the same color as the mineral
specimen.
w
Explain why some minerals exhibit mineral
cleavage, and how and why cleavage is
different for different minerals.
w
Demonstrate how to determine the number and
direction of cleavage planes of a
mineral sample.
w
Demonstrate how to determine a mineral's
solubility.
w
List the two common ways to recognize that a
