By the end of today's class, you should be able to do the following:

TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS AND STREAMS

w   Using the scale on a topographic map, find the distance between two points.

w
  Determine the direction a stream flows based on a topographic map, using just the shape of the contours (not elevation labels).

w   Using a USGS topographic map, define and identify these landforms/features:
 
  ○  hill  ○  valley ○  stream
  ○  floodplain ○  lake ○  oxbow (and oxbow lake)
    ○  meander ○  closed depression (basin)

w   Using USGS topographic map, tell how each of the following features is portrayed or symbolized on the maps, and find an example of each:

  ○  a benchmark  ○  a mine or quarry ○  closed depression (basin)
  ○  a forested or undeveloped area ○  an urbanized area    
    a very steep slope   a gentle slope   

w   Using the stream table and topographic maps in the room, complete the attached worksheets.
