Daily Objectives #4 (September
4, 2008)
A few of the geologic maps students have found for their homework assignments:
Kentucky
Wisconsin
Louisiana
Delaware
By the end of today's class, you should be able to do the following:
Putting it all together:
Earth's Internal Structure and Geotectonics
w
Draw a diagram illustrating the
internal structure of the earth. Label and describe the major layers based
on density and state (e.g. liquid vs. solid).
Label and describe the major layers based on deformation characteristics.
w
Explain how the characteristics listed
above affect the behavior of lithospheric plates, particularly at plate
boundaries (edges).
w
Define the terms lithosphere and
asthenosphere.
w
List the characteristics of the rocks
that are the predominant components of the continents vs. the ocean floor.
w
List the three major types of plate
boundaries. For convergent boundaries, list the three possible
combinations of converging plates.
w
Describe the geologic features that
would be found at each of the plate boundaries listed above, and explain how
each feature develops.
w
Tell what is expected of you in the
homework assignments, "The Key to Minerals", and "The Key to Rocks".
