CHICAGO ROCKS! Geology in the City
ESCI 109, Section 02
Fall 2009
Daily Objectives
#20 (November 12, 2009)
Dr. Sanders
We have a field trip to Gompers Park today!
Gompers Park is located at the corner of Pulaski Road and Foster Avenue, about a
mile from NEIU. We will meet in the parking lot on the Pulaski (east)
side, by the basketball court.
Make plans in advance to figure out how you will get there! Parking is
limited at the site, so carpooling is a good option, as are walking, biking, and
taking the Foster (92) bus. If you have a class immediately before this
one, getting a ride with someone who can pick you up outside your classroom is a
good idea.
By the end of today's class, you should be able to do the following:
Topographic Maps
w (Review) Use contours on a topographic map to find the
location of stream valleys.
w (Review) Determine the direction of flow of a stream using
contours on a topographic map.
w (Review) Sketch what a stream valley would look like on a
topographic map.
w (Review) Using contours on a topographic map, point out
areas of steeper slopes and less steep slopes.
Stream Processes
w Trace the stream
at Gompers Park from beginning to end, describing the changes it undergoes
throughout its course.
w Explain how a
constructed wetlands functions to help resolve some urban water management
problems.
