ESCI 109, Section 02
Fall 2009
Review Sheet for Exam #2 (November 10, 2009)
Dr. Sanders
For the exam, you should be able to do the following:
Skills
w
Using maps: use, correlate, and interpret maps of the Chicago area, including
road map, topographic map, physiographic map, and geologic map.
w
Use the Library website and databases to search for and locate resources.
Glacial Geology
w
Describe the glacial processes that led to the development of
the Chicago landscape.
w
Define the terms moraine, end moraine, ground moraine, lake plain, outlet
valley, and till, and explain their
relevance to Chicago geology.
Topographic Maps
w Explain the concepts contour,
contour interval, and topographic map.
w Use contours on a topographic map to find the
location of hills and stream valleys.
w Determine the direction of flow of a stream using
contours on a topographic map.
w Sketch what a stream valley would look like on a
topographic map.
w Using contours on a topographic map, point out
areas of steeper slopes and less steep slopes.
The Mega-Mosaic
w Determine the
locations of high land and low land for a select group of topographic
quadrangles.
w Put together the
information from the topographic quadrangles to complete a "mosaic" picture of
topography in the area of interest.
Putting It All Together
w Using
topographic, geologic, physiographic, and street maps, locate the position of a specific study
area.
w Describe the
study area in terms of its topography and surficial geology.
w Generate
hypotheses for the study area's formation
w Generate
hypotheses explaining the link between geology and land use in the area.
w List the steps
you would take to investigate this study area on a field trip.
Rock Wall
w View the slide show describing the
rock wall
experience we will have next week.
w State your goal with
respect to the rock wall climbing experience we will have on Thursday.
(See the
slide show here.) Share your goal with your team, and discuss how to
support each other in reaching that goal on Thursday.
