The first component of Real Life Issues Curriculum Infusion is Assessment. It consists of three elements.
  • The first element is Assessment of Classroom Diversity. Knowledge of diversity provides a necessary context for understanding the real life issues students confront and for developing effective instructional strategies to address life issues.
  • The second element is Assessment of the Real Life Issues Affecting Students. The model asks that teachers understand the prevalence and importance of the real life issues affecting their students. Understanding real life issues affecting students includes understanding social and environmental factors that contribute to the issues. It also includes understanding how social injustices in the society produce life issues that many K-12 students confront.
  • The third element is Self Assessment. The method calls on teachers to examine their own attitudes and perceptions of students and communities and their attitudes and behaviors related to the real life issues.
