My Linguistics course history:
Summer 2002 - LING 201
Introduction to Linguistics… Completed.
This was an extremely
interesting class, because I am very interested in foreign languages. Simple
enough…
Fall 2002 - LING 303
Grammars of English… Completed.
This was also an extremely
interesting class, because it teaches you English Grammar. I know, I know,
everybody thinks that’s boring. But it’s not because we are learning the
grammar that we all should have learned in our earlier years. Compared to this,
all of the grammar that I learned from Grades 1 through 12 was quite watered
down, and somewhat inadequate.
I may post some of my notes
from LING 201 and LING 303 here soon, but not yet. I won’t be able to guarantee
their accuracy as I am not a teacher, but only a student. But I believe they
are sound. If in doubt, ask your professor.
(Look for links to the notes
here coming soon.)
Spring 2003 – LING 340
TESL: Practices and Procedures… Completed.
In this course I have visited
an ESL class at Wright College and written a paper about it (I’ll post it here
soon.) I’ve done two take home exams already, and it’s not over yet. If you
take this course, be prepared to do the same after visiting an ESL/EFL class,
and to do a final project, and to do four take home exams, and to work in small
groups with your classmates to answer questions about syllabus design, teaching
approaches, etc. Bring a smile and a positive attitude and a good work ethic to
class, and you’ll do better.
Summer 2003 – Computer Science
courses only…
Fall 2003 – LING 322 Introduction to Sociolinguistics…Completed.
Spring 2004 – LING 341 Teaching English as a Second Language: Principles of Language Teaching… Completed.
Summer 2004 – LING 343 Assessment of the LEP Student… Completed.
I am interested in the idea of
teaching English as a Second Language or teaching a foreign language to English
speakers. I have tutored a little bit on various occasions in Chicago and in
Estonia and it was very rewarding (albeit not financially.) I have never
tutored on an official basis, in other words… Update: As of late March of 2004,
I am now tutoring ESL on an official basis at the Albany Park Community Center.
I am currently seeking employment on a full-time or part-time basis.
I would welcome the opportunity to become an ESL teacher or tutor.

I have declared the undergraduate
minor of Linguistics: TESOL Concentration as my second minor after
Physics. Unfortunately, this means more time in school, and I’ve already
been in school too long during my adult life because of taking classes
that didn’t fill graduation requirements. As of early July, however, I have
completed all of the coursework necessary for this minor.

I have also found a few links for English Grammar
that can be of great assistance to the student of linguistics or to anybody who wants to improve
their English grammar.
Here is a link to The Internet Grammar of English
from University College London:

The only other link I can think of is
to the home page of my Dutch friend, Rogier. He is an emerging linguist of quite
some skill. Ok, it’s kind of like a home page… I guess he’s too busy:
