17 April      END OF THE YEAR PARTY!!!     see details here.... you must bring your ID and your ticket to be admitted
10 April
Note a change to the individual project time line: the next 'deliverable' will be due on 17 April; details are posted
Note changes also to team project time line dates
9 April     FIELD TRIP on  Tuesday, 15 April to Gompers Park.
WE WILL MEET AT THE PARK: DO NOT COME TO CLASSROOM!
You should be at the meeting place in the park at the scheduled starting time for your class.

Gompers Park is located at the southwest corner of Foster and Pulaski.  To see its general location, relative to NEIU and Bohemian National Cemetery, click here.
We will meet in the parking lot off of Pulaski.  If you are driving, enter through the driveway that is just south of the river (which is south of Foster) -- the first driveway south of the intersection, on the west side of Pulaski.
Zoom in on the map linked above, and you will see the driveway and the parking lot in the satellite image.  Meet us at the basketball hoops next to the parking lot.   DRESS FOR THE WEATHER!!

3 April       An additional assignment for your research paper has been posted; it is due on Tuesday, 8 April.  Check the term project resource page (individual time line) for details.
1 April       The review list has been updated -- note clarifications and deletions.
10 March                  FIELD TRIP on  Thursday, 13 March to Bohemian National Cemetery
WE WILL MEET AT THE CEMETERY: DO NOT COME TO THE CLASSROOM!
Click this link for a satellite image/map view of the location, relative to NEIU.   Although you can easily see the cemetery from the NEIU campus, you must enter from Pulaski Ave. -- walking from campus may take 20+ minutes (at a brisk pace), so plan  accordingly.  You should have planned with your team about getting there, but if you want to car-pool with other classmates, use the NEIUportal group and start a discussion!

The entrance to the cemetery is on Pulaski, just north of Foster Ave: if you zoom in on the satellite image, you will see that the entrance driveway is flanked by the gatehouse --a brick structure on either side of the drive: you will enter here.
Once inside the gatehouse, turn to your right and you will see the cemetery office; there is limited parking available nearby.  Look for your instructor If you are driving, please observe extreme caution and slow down!    The roadways in the cemetery are very narrow, and many historic and irreplaceable monuments are close to the roads.  You should drive slowly and carefully and be alert for pedestrians and for others exiting their vehicles.

This cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.  Visiting the cemetery for a field trip is not unusual: the cemetery has frequent tour groups, as well as other students studying history, art, anthropology, etc.
Although historic, it is also still an operating cemetery, so other visitors may be there to mourn or to visit the resting place of loved ones.   I ask and expect your full cooperation in all ways, most especially by behaving as an adult, in an appropriate and  respectful manner.

26 Feb     AWESOME JOB on the rock wall, everyone!!  What a good time!
click here for details of the team assignment that we talked about...
It is due on Thursday, 28 Feb, and can either be submitted via email or in hard copy -- read the details for specific information about what is included, and the required format of the submitted assignment
21 Feb:    We will meet at the PE building on Tuesday - refer to email notice for more information!
You will need to bring your ID to enter the building.
We will meet in the Auxiliary Gym at the scheduled starting time for your class!
20 Feb:    Note - scavenger hunt #3 is now due not later than the start of class on Tuesday, 26 Feb.
TEAM ASSIGNMENT on goals is due not later than 5 pm tomorrow (Thurs, 21 Feb)
 14 Feb:
1 - TEAM ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:   Each team member should view this slide show about the rock wall, and determine your individual goal for that activity.  Additional details for the team assignment are now available on the assignment page.
2 - NEW UPDATE:  UNFORTUNATELY... our rock wall activity is being rescheduled.  We apparently got bumped from the original date of Feb 21 for a higher priority in the PE dept.    :o(
However, all is good!  We have been confirmed for Tuesday, Feb 26th.  THIS MEANS that on the 21st, we will meet in our regular classroom, you will have ample opportunity to connect with team members, and then on the 26th we will "hit the wall".   :oD
3 - Details for "scavenger hunt item #3" (due on 21 Feb) are now on the assignment page
5 Feb:    Don't forget!! We will be going on our "NEIU field trip" on Thursday, 7 Feb.
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER!!!  We will meet in the classroom, where you will turn in assignments, then we will promptly head out.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU BE ON TIME!!
Remember that field trips are regular, required class sessions (not optional!).
31 Jan:   I apologize for any confusion this may cause:  I realized that some students have only a Tuesday-Thursday on-campus schedule, and I do not want to cause a hardship by requiring a scavenger hunt item due on Tuesday (as I originally posted this afternoon).  So if you check now, you will see the two assignments (scavenger hunt #2 and the writing assignment) are both due on the 7th.
22 Jan:  I have re-organized the assignment page, so that reading and written assignments are more clearly delineated.  If you have any questions, or have any trouble finding information, please let me know!!
15 Jan:  Note that the in-class exercise ("Diversity Rocks!") was graded with a check system.
The rubric used for this type of grade, which will be used for many assignments, is available as one of your "Basic Course Documents" on this webpage.
PLEASE!  If you have had any problems accessing course documents from the webpage, or have had trouble with any of the links that you need to access, let me know as soon as possible.
Assignment deadlines are looming, and you don't want to miss any because of computer issues!  (do you know what is due on Thursday?  how about next Tuesday?? Remember that assignments are listed ON THE DUE DATE!!)
10 Jan:  A student from last semester just came to visit me, and is offering his used copy of both the FYE binder and the ISGS printed booklet for sale at reduced prices!  First come, first served -- the FYE binder is $15; he would like $5 for the ISGS pages to reimburse his copy costs.  If you are interested, send me an email and I can put you in touch.
The instructions about printing the ISGS pages are available here.
8 Jan:   (well, okay, the 9th....sorry for the delay!  hopefully problems will be fewer after this week)
What a great first class session we had!
I'm so happy to have you in class this semester -- I'm looking forward to having fun and learning with you!
Remember some of the important things that we talked about in class today:
    - what you should bring to class each session;
    - purchase your FYE binder so that you can start reading the first assignment;
    - determine how you will print the ISGS book from CD (remember you need to print in color!)
    - don't forget your completed student survey and schedule worksheet   (due on 10 Jan)

Important information about printing the ISGS book:
  • First check out the CD-ROM from the instructors!  Note the policy about borrowing ESCI materials.
  • If you do not have an available personal printer, color printing from the CD-ROM is possible in the Multimedia Learning Resource Center (MLRC) on the 3rd floor of the Ronald Williams Library (unfortunately, the student computer labs do not have color printers).  Tell them that this is required for  this class -- in the past, students have been allowed to print in color without cost when it is required for a class (though sometimes these things do change).
  • Color printing is also available at various copy centers such as Office Max and others (variable cost).

It is strongly recommended that you print the ISGS book so that you have a full-color version of all included figures and photos; however, if you have limited access to color printing capability, the list below represents the minimum that you ABSOLUTELY MUST print in color.

Note that these numbers represent the page numbers as labeled within the document. You will need to scroll through the file and make sure that you are printing, for example, the page that is labeled with a number "5" at the bottom.  When the correct page is in view, you can use the "print current page" option to ensure printing the page that is needed.
   PAGES TO PRINT IN COLOR:    5,  7,  9,  21,  37,  40,  43,  44,  45,  51.

Even if you are trying to minimize your cost, I recommend that you 'page through' the text on the computer before printing, to identify additional pages that you might wish to print in color.  We will be using this book extensively during the semester, and you may find other diagrams and photos that would be best to print in color as well.

Bring your printed document to class, and (unless you've already done so yourself), I will have a 3-hole punch so that you can the fit the pages into your FYE binder.

Details of team assignment - due 28 Feb:

The question you should discuss as a team is:
"In what way(s) can your team use this experience to improve teamwork for the term project?"

Your discussion can take place by email, phone, or in person, but it should involve all of your team members (even if they were not present today at the rock wall).   You should come to a team consensus -- an agreement about the lessons from today's experience that you can take forward as a team.   Choose a team recorder to type the assignment -- have a contingency plan in case that person cannot be here on Thursday!!!
("That person isn't here" is not a valid excuse for missing the due date!)

Things to consider in your discussion might reasonably include:
-- How do we function effectively if a team member is unable to attend a team meeting, in which we have specific goals to accomplish?
-- What does each of us expect from team-mates, in terms of support and cooperation, to accomplish specific goals?
-- How do we try to foster a team spirit that keeps everyone committed to our team goals?
-- How do we decide what is the best approach for the team, in light of individual differences?
-- and other aspects that you think are appropriate!

Your team statement need not be long -- a short paragraph, or a bullet list of important points, would be fine.

The required format for this assignment is as follows:
>>  must be typed, not longer than one page
>>  heading information must include section number, names of all team-mates, and the assignment due date.
>>  assignment can be submitted either as a hard copy at the start of class on Thursday, or as
an email attachment (MS Word or Corel WordPerfect format) prior to the start of class on Thursday.
In either case, you should supply a copy of the assignment to each team-mate.

COURSE POLICIES for ESCI 109 - CHICAGO ROCKS

POLICY on BORROWING EARTH SCIENCE MATERIALS

When you sign out materials, you are signing a document that reads as follows:

The undersigned student borrowing Earth Science materials or equipment agrees to return the items in original condition within the specified time frame*.  Failure to comply with this policy may result in the student being assigned a grade of "Incomplete" until the items are returned or being billed for the replacement cost of the item.  Note that unpaid fines may result in a hold on the student's account, which may affect availability of grades, registration, and transcripts.

note that the specified time frame is either until the next class period, or (in some cases) one week.  Materials must be returned on time so that others have access.
