Joyce Jennings
Joyce Jennings, Chair of the
Department of Reading, received her doctorate in Reading and Language
from National-Louis University. Dr. Jennings is interested in working
with struggling readers, integrating reading and writing, and
professional development in literacy. She has taught Diagnosis and
Remediation of Reading Disabilities, Primary Reading Instruction,
Reading Instruction in Intermediate and Upper Grades, Measurement and
Evaluation in Reading, Reading and Writing Processes, Reading and
Writing in Content Areas, Methods of Teaching Reading, an integrated
class of Language Arts and Social Studies Methods, Clinical Practicum
in Reading, Curriculum and Supervision in Reading, and Innovative
Trends in Assessment. Areas of research include struggling readers,
reading and writing in content areas, and professional development in
literacy. Besides reading, Dr. Jennings enjoys spending time with her
family, biking, hiking, and travelling.

401: Developmental Reading Theory
This course includes the discussion and appraisal of the physiological,
psychological, and psycholinguistic bases of the developmental reading
process; discussion of learning theories as they relate to the teaching
of reading; critical analysis of theoretical models and frameworks of
the reading process and product, including discussion of models of
reading. Prerequisites include READ 412: Measurement and Evaluation of Reading,
READ 416: Primary Reading Instruction,
and READ 417: Reading Instruction in
Intermediate and Upper Grades.
