Rise of Sony

Even with the many bad points of the Playstation 3, many good points are still there. As before with DVD and the Playstation 2, PS3 is becoming a key player in the next-gen disc format wars, with Blu-Ray outselling its competitor, the Microsoft-backed HD-DVD more than 2-to-1. It seems Blu-Ray will be the disc of choice for high-definition movies. Even though Blu-Ray is expensive to develop on, developers seem to forget that they can distribute thier games through the Playstation Network as an alternative as well.

Even though Sony lost many exclusives, this doesn't mean it lost titles. The Final Fantasy XIII series will move PS3 units quickly in Japan, and may spread globally from there. Many forget that Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4 will be exclusive as well.

While many laud Nintendo's Miis and Microsoft's Xbox Live as innovative, Sony grabbed the attention of many with the annoucement of Home. Home allows the users to create a custom avatar which resides in a virtual space, which can interact with other users. The user can also create a virtual apartment, where users can share video, audio, and thier gaming achievements.

All this and the cost to the user to use the Playstation Network and Home is nothing. Sony has the right idea to make this available to the PS3 user for free, considering the cost of the console.
