Defense of the Playstation 3

No one can afford a Playstation 3. Why should I get it?

Remember at launch, all the systems sold out. That's quite a bit of people who could afford to go out and buy the system. Also, remember that a lot of the launch systems found thier way to eBay, which sold on average for over $1000 (and even over $2000) for a few weeks. So, you can't tell me the average person can't afford the system, what with our credit card-filled society. The system is good, as I haven't heard so much of a peep of a complaint from owners, myself included. The system will have plenty of good games, even if it lost exclusives. And the games out now are pretty good compared to the launch games of Playstation 1 and 2, which were terrible by the way. The key is patience.

Microsoft's Xbox Live is so much better than Playstation Network.

While that is true, Live has its bad points. Microsoft charges money for players to connect to Xbox Live, all while not having a central game server. This causes some major lag if you don't connect to another Xbox 360 user with a good connection. So, why should a player pay $50 to get "achievements"? Sony offers free online play and Home over the Playstation Network all on a central server, offering little lag. Plus you can get a virtually limitless virtual trophy room called the "Hall of Fame" in Home, along with the possibility of uploading videos of your major gaming achievements.

Maybe people have been buying Playstation 3, but I see a stack of them at Best Buy. Guess no one bought them.

Not entirely true either. As of today, Playstation 3 has sold 3.25 million+ units worldwide. Not too bad considering 5 millions units have been shipped worldwide. Europe apparently has been eating them up too. Sales are sure to pick up when the AAA+ games come out later this year and next year.

Sony's PR statements make no sense.

Sadly, Sony's higher-up employees have had a tendency to make bad PR statements, which have turned off a lot of people. Ken Kutaragi has made this his trademark in that when he opens his mouth, he's going to offend someone. Who could forget such quotes as:

"We want for consumers to think to themselves, 'I will work more hours to buy one.' We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."

"The PS3 will instill discipline in our children and adults alike. Everyone will know discipline."

"The PS3 is not a game machine."

This doesn't necessarily mean that Playstation 3 is bad, but rather thier mouths should have stayed shut. By the way, Kutaragi has recently retired.

There's no rumble! My older Playstation 1 and 2 games don't rumble either!

Ah, well, there will be rumble. Sony was forced to remove the rumble features in the SIXAXIS controller due to the lawsuit with Immersion, which has been settled. Immersion and Sony will now develop new ways to introduce rumble into future PS3 controllers. And if you want it so bad, older PS1/PS2 accesories now work with the PS3 via a USB converter. They even rumble like they used to. Now you can play Guitar Hero to your heart's content.

My Xbox 360 version of a game looks the same as the PS3 version.

That's the result of lazy, lazy developers. Rather than learning how to make the best of the Cell processor and the graphic chipset, developers have simply been porting games over. Sure, it's cheaper, but it seems few want to go the extra mile to make the best looking games for PS3.

Can you tell the difference?
