The "Grove Music Dictionary Assignment" consists of the following:
Go to the 'Online Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians' and read an article
of interest to you. Then, post a message (i.e. start a new thread) on the MCO
discussion board, discussing and reviewing that article. Instructions on how
to access the Online Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians are shown below.
How to logon to the Dictionary
From NEIU:
1) go to http://orion.neiu.edu/~neiulib/
2) click on "Databases"
3) click on "Humanities"
4) click on "Grove Music"
From Off-Campus:
1) go to http://orion.neiu.edu/~neiulib/
2) click on "Databases"
3) click on "Humanities"
4) click on "Grove Music"
5) enter your gamut login ID and password
- Your gamut login is your first initial,
followed by your middle initial,
followed by your last name, up to 8
characters (no caps).
- Your default gamut password is your first
initial followed by your SS#.
Make sure your assignment covers these items:

The Textbook Assignments: Computer Drills and Written Exercises
Instructions on doing the written exercises and computer drills:

Hand in the "Midterm" Exercises and drills at or before the Midterm Exam. Hand in the "Final" Exercises
Drills on or before "All Assignments and Computer Drills Due" day (see class calendar). Leave them in my
mailbox in the Fine Arts Building (along the west wall in the Music Department mailboxes) or hand them in
at a class meeting.

First, read the web pages dedicated to the subject area (Sound, Notation, etc.)

Then, read the appropriate material in the textbook

Then, check out the appropriate online lecture and FAQs pages

Then, do the appropriate written assignments
- Note: Xerox the blank page(s) from the book, and do the assignments on them, or use music manuscript
paper.

Then, do the appropriate computer drills
- Note: Print out the report of the drills or email me the report file, DON'T print our each drill.

Then, do the online quizzes to test how well you've learned the material

Important: at all times in this process, send email to MCO-L regarding questions, and
respond to email from other students in the class. WARNING: there will be heavy traffic
on this list.
