SURVEY RESULTS

The University participates in several statewide and national surveys. Survey results are posted on this page as they become available.

Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) Faculty Survey
Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) Alumni Survey

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The annual National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) obtains information from hundreds of four-year colleges and universities nationwide about student participation in programs and activities that facilitate student learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. NEIU has participated in the NSSE since its inception in 2000.

Survey items on The National Survey of Student Engagement represent empirically confirmed "good practices" in undergraduate education. That is, they reflect behaviors by students and institutions that are associated with desired outcomes of college.

Member of the NEIU community use the NSSE data to identify aspects of the undergraduate experience inside and outside the classroom that can be improved through changes in policies and practices more consistent with good practices in undergraduate education.
Beginning in 2007, the NSSE began producing brief reports for all participating institutions. The NEIU reports provide prospective students and their parents with an overview of NEIU; reports for NEIU are available below in pdf format.

2008 Pocket Guide
2007 Pocket Guide

The reports can be used in conjunction with the NSSE’s A Pocket Guide to Choosing a College. This Guide is available in English and in Spanish at http://nsse.iub.edu/html/pocket_guide_intro.cfm. It provides a road map of important questions all prospective students should ask when choosing a college. Many of the answers to these questions can be found in the above brief reports.

Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) Faculty Survey

The HERI Faculty Survey is designed to provide colleges and universities with timely information about the attitudes, experiences, concerns, job satisfaction, workload, teaching practices, and professional activities of collegiate faculty and administrators. The survey is offered every three years. Since its inception in 1989, over 300,000 faculty at more than 1,100 two-year and four-year colleges nationwide have participated. NEIU participated in the HERI Faculty Survey during the 2001-02 and 2007-08 academic years. The next survey cycle will be 2010-2011.

Information resulting from the survey can be used to facilitate self study and accreditation activities, monitor campus climate, inform campus planning and policy analysis, enhance faculty development programs, and improve students’ educational experiences.

Survey results for the most recent administration of the survey are provided in the pdf file below. NEIU faculty member responses are compared to faculty members at public four-year colleges, and more generally with faculty at all four-year institutions.

Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) Alumni Survey

The IBHE alumni survey includes questions on career preparation and employment experiences, advanced degrees, effectiveness of NEIU instruction, and satisfaction with NEIU. The data provide important information for program review and development as well as alumni relations. Beginning in 2009, questions were added to guide Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations in their efforts to better serve and engage alumni.

All state universities in Illinois are required to survey their alumni one year, five years, and nine years post-graduation, each on a three year cycle. Seeing the value of the information, NEIU made an internal decision to survey every cohort of alumni one year post-graduation, resulting in the following schedule. Summary reports for all surveys administered for the past five years are provided below in pdf format.
