ROBIN BATES

ROBIN BATES studies the intellectual and cultural history of modern Europe, with an emphasis on France. In his doctoral dissertation "Regimes of Education: Pedagogy and the Political Reconstruction of Post-revolutionary France, 1789-1848" (University of Chicago) he examines how the theory and practice of education offered an arena both to imagine and also to control the social dynamics of the new, unfamiliar France that emerged from the Revolution. A journal article taken from this dissertation, "Madame Guizot and Monsieur Guizot: Domestic Pedagogy and the Post-Revolutionary Order in France, 1807-1830," has appeared in the April 2011 issue of Modern Intellectual History.
