The Chicago Seminar on Sport and Culture has been co-sponsored by Northeastern Illinois University and the Dr. William M. Scholl Center for Family and Community History at the Newberry Library since it originated in 1995 under the co-direction of Steven Riess and Patrick Miller. The seminar is intended to bring together scholars from a variety of fields to share their research into the history, sociology, literature, anthropology and economics of sport. We have welcomed comparative as well as interdisciplinary perspecitves, and considered the development of sport within diverse cultural settings. To date, the seminar has hosted more than 50 scholars, whose topics range beyond the playing fields to such issues as the social construction of masculinity or the relationship between sport and ethnic identity. |

| Featuring the presentation of original research by scholars in the field as well as cultural commentary on sport, the Chicago Seminar is intended to stimulate wide-ranging discussions among scholars and informed publics. All presentations are free and open to the public. | ||
The seminar meets at the Newberry Library, 60 West Walton, Chicago, IL.
