CHARLES STEINWEDEL. Associate Professor of History. Professor Steinwedel’s teaching interests include Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet history; Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century; Europe 1871-1919; and graduate courses on the Russian Revolution and European Empires. His research examines empire, nationality, and religion in late imperial Russia. Work on his current project, "Russian Empire in the East: Status, Religion, and Nationality in Bashkiria, 1552-1917," has been supported by grants from the Social Science Research Council, The Harriman Institute, the International Research Exchanges Board, and the American Council of Teachers of Russian. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University.Associate Professor of History.
