System Success and Failure: Implementation

  1. Major problem areas in information systems

In general, information systems are tools for certain operations or actions. Therefore, failures of using information systems are very similar to failures in using tools: (1) not used in the intended way; (2) put them aside without using them; (3) or because of certain individual or organizational subjective factors.

  2. What is meant by a successful information system?

    1. level of system use
    2. user satisfaction
    3. favorable user attitudes about the information system and its staff
    4. achieved objectives, and
    5. financial payoff to the organiztion.

One can see how important is to engage users in all phases of system development!!

  3. causes of information system failure
    1. insufficient or improper user participation in the system development process
    2. lack of management support
    3. high levels of complexity and risk in systems development process
    4. poor management of the implementation process

The skill of selling and engaging people is so necessary. Unfortunately, most systems people have the tendency to love systems and to choose to avoid people. [This may be the reason system people become the way they are: self selection] Small wonder that there is a very high rate of failure among system projects.

    5. It is very critical to steer the engagement trajectory among system specialists, end users, and decision makers to deal with the key implementation issues.

    6. It is very important to keep in mind that contingencies will pop up every moment in the management of the implementation trajectory. Therefore, level of resources should be prepared to deal with the corresponding level of emerging problems; otherwise, implementation can be failure in any moment!

    7. Make sure of continusing engaging all interest groups!!
